Mona Tian is a violinist based in Los Angeles. A graduate from California Institute of the Arts in violin performance, she has studied under Lorenz Gamma and Mark Menzies. She started playing violin at the age of 3, under the teaching of Chongyu Ma, associate concertmaster of Shanghai Symphony, and professor Jiyang Zhao, Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Mona made her first major solo debut at the age of 8 in China, playing flight of the bumble bee and Mozart violin sonata K304 in e minor. A year later, After three rounds of audition, competing against 80 applicants, she was one out of the seven students who were accepted into the pre-college division of Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the school’s notable alumni include pianist Lang Lang, Yujia Wang, composer Tan Dun and many more. At age 12, Mona was accepted with full scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy, studied under Todor Pelev, Peter Askim, Ransom Wilson, John Walz and the Calder Quartet. She was the youngest member to join Idyllwild Summer Festival Orchestra, conducted by Larry Livingston, and performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall for two summers.
Mona is an original member of the Pacifica Red Coral ensemble (string quartet with harp); The ensemble is appointed by Pulitzer award finalist, Avant-Garde Jazz composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. Mona is currently touring the Pulitzer award nominated Ten Freedom Summers by Wadada Leo Smith. Mona has performed with two times Grammy Award winning ensemble Southwest Chamber music, The Code International, Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet, Debut Orchestra, Formalist Quartet, Flux Quartet, Bill T Jones Dance Company, and well-known musicians such as Timothy Fain, John Walz, Vinny Golia, John Lindberg, Pheeroan Aklaff, Anthony Davis, Wadada Leo Smith, Shalini Vijayan, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Anthony Brown and more. Mona has performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall (L.A.), Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (L.A.), Mostra SESC de Artes (São Paulo), REDCAT (L.A.), Roulette Theater (NYC), The Industry (L.A.), Bootleg Theater (L.A.), Congress Center Saalfelden (Austria), Pritzker Pavilion(Chicago), Mack Sennette Studios (L.A.), Atlas Theater (Washington DC) and more. In September 2014, Mona has joined the first violin section of YMF Debut Orchestra. In addition to performing, she is currently a teaching artist at Harmony Project.
Besides playing music, Mona is also a part time film maker and the founder/director of NTS KITCHEN.
